On the Chew

Every condition that matters — wind, swell, tides, rain and moon — on one screen, before you hit the water. Built for NSW recreational anglers.

What is On the Chew?

On the Chew is a fishing-conditions app developed by TechBooster for NSW recreational anglers. It replaces the frustrating juggle between BOM, tide tables and weather apps with a single screen that shows everything you need before heading out.

The app deliberately avoids any bite-time or "best time to fish" predictions — it surfaces raw, authoritative data and lets the angler decide. Rock platform, estuary or small boat — the same conditions matter.

Beyond conditions, anglers can sign in with Apple, Google or email to share their catches with photos and mark fishing spots on a community map — with likes and comments on every post.

Anglers can also team up: post an open invite from any public spot with a time and headcount, and others join directly — no approval needed.

A built-in Species Lookup covers NSW fish rules — legal size, bag limit and possession limit for each species — so anglers can check before they keep a fish, not after.

Know the rules before you keep a fish.

Species Lookup is a searchable database covering NSW recreational fishing rules — legal size, bag limit and possession limit for every listed species. Each entry pairs a photo with fish facts, so anglers can identify a catch and check the rules in the same screen.

It follows the same philosophy as the rest of the app: real data from authoritative sources, not guesswork — with fish facts sourced from references like FishBase and NSW DPI Fisheries.

Features

Wind & Swell

Real-time wind speed in knots, gusts, 16-point compass direction, and a 12-hour strip chart. Swell height, period and direction from the Open-Meteo marine model.

Rain Forecast

Animated 12-hour precipitation probability map for the NSW region. Color-coded blobs show where rain is likely — from light chance to near-certain.

Tide Module — pending official data

High/low tide times, full-day curve and spring/neap state are built into the app, ready to switch on the moment an official NSW source (BOM/NTC or a licensed provider) is connected. Rather than ship an estimate, the app shows an honest "source required" state until then — we don't guess at tides.

Wind Flow Map

600 animated spindle-shaped particles flow across a dark map in real time, showing the direction and relative speed of the wind. Updated from hourly model data.

Sun Times

First light, sunrise, sunset and last light — computed on-device with no network dependency using the NOAA sunrise equation.

Moon Phase

Current moon phase name, illumination percentage, waxing/waning trend and a spring/neap indicator — useful for understanding fish activity patterns.

Pressure & Conditions

Atmospheric pressure in hPa with a 3-hour trend indicator (rising/steady/falling), cloud cover percentage, UV index and air temperature.

Multiple Spots

Save as many fishing spots as you need. Search any place in NSW, tap to switch spots, and all conditions update instantly for that location.

Share Your Catches

Post a catch with up to 6 photos, species, weight and length. Sign in with Apple, Google or email — your catches appear on a public community feed for other anglers to see.

Community Spots Map

Mark a fishing spot with a tap on the map and share it with the community — everyone's marked spots appear as pins on one shared map, browsed spatially rather than as a list.

Team Up

Post an open invite from any public spot — pick a time and a headcount, and other anglers can join directly, no approval needed. See who's joined, and disband the team anytime as the host.

Likes & Comments

Like and comment on any shared catch or spot. Tap an angler's avatar to see their full catch history.

Species Lookup

A searchable database of NSW fish species with legal size, bag limit and possession limit for each — plus a photo and fish facts on every entry. Know the rules before you keep a fish.

Direct Messages

Message other anglers directly, with a dedicated inbox and push notifications for replies, likes and comments — so you never miss a reply.

Angler Profile

A profile that tracks your Posts, Favorites and Likes, organised into Catch, Gear, Tips and Collections — plus who you follow, who follows you, and the groups you've joined.

Built for Your Preferences

Switch the app language between English, Chinese and Korean, and choose your preferred wind speed unit (knots, km/h or mph). Block anyone you don't want contact from, and permanently delete your account and all shared data at any time.
